Your Career in Psychology: Endless Possibilities

Psychologists contribute to almost every profession, from education, health and social care to the legal system, business leadership and sport performance. Psychology is a vast field with endless possibilities.

Do you often ask, or think, “why?”. If so, studying Psychology could be a very good choice for you. Psychologists are curious people by nature, and they never stop learning. Psychologists seek to understand how the brain and our environment affects our behaviour and emotions. They contribute widely to the development of our society through the rigorous and scientific study of complex individual and social issues. Since society keeps changing, psychologists constantly need to keep learning, by researching and developing both our understanding and solutions to new problems. One thing is for sure, you will never get bored in this field!

Many people think that the main role of a psychologist is to diagnose and treat people with mental health issues. A good number of psychologists do indeed work with individuals to help them to overcome their mental health difficulties and adjust to the challenges associated with injury, chronic illness and/or disability. Psychologists have indeed made many important contributions to the treatment and recovery of people with mental health problems and to the field of rehabilitation in general, over the past few decades.  But psychology is much more than just this. Nowadays psychologists also work with business executives, school children and educators, sports teams and athletes to help both individuals and groups to reduce stress, collaborate better, enhance resilience and personal strengths, and to achieve their potential. Another important area where psychology contributes significantly to society is the field of health promotion. Psychoeducation programmes play an important role in the prevention of mental and physical health problems from developing and research of health beliefs and attitudes is helping advance understanding of health-related behaviour. In short, it is hard to think of a profession where psychology cannot be applied.

Do you want to enhance your critical thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills? A degree in psychology is a great way to develop them all. Understanding how to use research findings and psychological knowledge and skills to design interventions – and how to test their efficacy - is a great skill to have in a wide variety of professions. Study psychology for a career with endless possibilities.
