Coronavirus is a type of virus. There are many different kinds, and some of them cause disease. A newly identified type has caused a recent outbreak of respiratory illness it’s like the common cold to more severe diseases such as severe respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) now is called COVID-19.

Coronavirus started in China on December 31,2019, there was the first reports of a previously-unknown virus behind a number of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, a city in eastern China with a population of over 11 million people. It was from Wuhan seafood market where wild animals, including marmots, birds, rabbits, bats and snakes, are traded illegally. Coronaviruses are known to jump from animals to humans, so it’s thought that the first people infected with the disease – a group primarily made up of stallholders from the seafood market – contracted it from contact with animals. What started as an epidemic mainly limited to China has now become truly global pandemic.

The virus can be spread through droplets released into the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The droplets generally do not travel more than a few feet, and they fall to the ground or into surfaces in a few seconds, that’s why social and physical distancing is effective in preventing the spread. The COVID-19 symptoms are cough, fever, shortness of breath, muscle aches, sore throat, unexplained loss of taste or smell, diarrhea, headaches. In rare cases, it can lead to severe respiratory problems, but also to kidney failure or death. For now, there is not a specific treatment for the virus. People who become sick from the COVID-19 should be treated with supportive measures. Those that relieve symptoms. For severe cases, there may be additional options for treatment, including research drugs and therapeutics.

A vaccine for COVID-19 isn’t around the corner. Bringing vaccines to the market is a notoriously slow process and any potential vaccine will have to pass multiple stages of testing for safety and effectiveness. And once we know a vaccine is safe, we will also need to manufacture it at a scale high enough to use across the world. It’s likely that any vaccine is around 18 months away.

That said, there is lots of work being done to develop a vaccine for COVID-19 The pharmaceutical firm Sanofi is trying to build on its already-approved flu vaccine and turn it into something suitable to treat COVID-19. Other approaches – such as one being trialled by the University of Oxford – are focusing on the external spike proteins on the COVID-19 virus as a way to target vaccines but accelerating these efforts will require funding. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has called for $2 billion in funding to support the development of new coronavirus vaccines.

Coronavirus is a serious problem because the treatment is unknown and many people have died from the virus and the most important is that it’s easily spread if you come in contact with other people. The mysterious is still in a question mark but soon it will be answered and hopefully it will save lots of peoples lives too if it’s not too late until then.
